If you're looking for a simple yet cheap midi controller, this is probably your best bet.

I originally chose the nanoKONTROL over the nanoPAD for my Serato because 1) it has more buttons in a single scene and, 2) it has knobs, which really come in handy for controlling effects that function over a gradient, rather than a simple on/off. There are four "scenes" that allow you to essentially quadruple the amount of features you can control with the given amount of buttons and knobs. Serato doesn't have too many features so I find myself only using a single scene. For power users with heavier programs, you'll probably find yourself using at least two. That still leaves plenty of room for expansion. No, it's not backlit, though there are LEDs indicating which button is active or depressed buttons, but for $40, it's still a steal.

When you get the controller, you might notice that one or two buttons seem to not work. I even returned my original because I thought it was defective. What actually happens is that you can use a program that you download off Korg's website to change the properties of each button/knob/switch. Apparently, not all the buttons are always set to "on" right out of the box, so you may have to do some DIY work. A little annoying, but not enough to take a star off.

Yes, it feels cheap, but I really don't mind. It's very lightweight and convenient to place over my laptop's keyboard, and has rubber grips to hold it in place.

My only real complaints are of the flimsy rubbery buttons.

First, they aren't as responsive as, say, a laptop keyboard. It takes a fraction of a second or so for the rubbery button to go all the way down and start the intended effect, as opposed to an almost instant response time for a keyboard. This lag time get's annoying for live, time-sensitive applications, where you need to turn on/off the effect at precisely that moment. For these occasions, I find myself temporarily using the laptop's buttons.

Secondly, the rubber buttons are flimsy and do allow lateral movement, so if you're not careful and apply too much pressure in a slightly off direction, the button gets stuck in the down position, so you have to nudge it back.

All relative rather minor annoyances that I can overlook. Seeing as the controller has lasted me almost three years of consistent gigs, and even outlasted it's original USB cable, I'd say that the nanoKONTROL gives excellent bang-for-the-buck.

The Nano is very lightweight and may slide around a surface during use. I would be very hesitant to travel with it. It is, however, fully functional as a MIDI controller (sends mostly control messages, some note messages). Moreover, there is a piece of accompanying software (KORG KONTROL Editor) which allows the user to customize the MIDI data that is sent from the device (continuous controller number, range of values, etc). There are four separate "scenes" on the device which are independently customizable. So far I have been using my Nano with SuperCollider and have achieved great results.

There is a slight "hiccup" in the smoothness of one of the faders. The fader just gets a little "stuck" about 3/4 of the way up. It's not a very big deal, but it is certainly a reflection on the overall quality of workmanship. It goes without saying that I'd prefer there not to be this minor defect. Fortunately, it doesn't skip any of the discrete values between 0 and 127.

My Nano arrived with a defective USB cable. When using this cable, the first LED on the Nano would illuminate for about 1 second, then turn off. After this, the device was completely unresponsive. Korg Product Support suggested I try a different cable, and fortunately they were right. Luckily, I have several USB cables lying around, and even more fortunately, there was nothing wrong with the device itself.

If you're looking for something you can drop on the ground or put a few scratches on, this is NOT for you. If you are gentle with your Nano, it will serve you well!

I was a little skeptical that for under 50$ this would do the job but all my worries were put to rest within 30 minutes of opening it! It's a little more than 12" long and a little over 3" wide. It's very portable and feels suprisingly solid. I manually configured it with sonar x1 Studio and it took me no more than 10 minutes with a little help from google. The sliders all are smooth and easy moving, but NOT loose, and the panning knobs work like a charm. If your producing music from a small home studio like me this is definately a must have!
